What we do ...
The Vital Statistics Agency is responsible for administering and enforcing The Vital Statistics Act, The Marriage Act, The Change of Name Act and processing disinterments under The Public Health Act. The Agency registers vital events (birth, death, marriage, stillbirth and change of name) in Manitoba and provides documents as proof of those events. Legislation protecting privacy governs who can access records held by the Agency. Our database contains information from vital event records from 1882 to present for the Province of Manitoba. Getting Married in Manitoba...
Marriages in Manitoba are performed by authorized clergy and marriage commissioners who are registered with Vital Statistics.
Couples can choose a religious ceremony solemnized by a registered member of the clergy or a civil ceremony with a licenced marriage commissioner.
Before the ceremony, the marriage licence and other documents are given to the clergy or marriage commissioner who completes the Registration of Marriage. This form is signed by the parties to the marriage and their witnesses after the ceremony. The clergy or marriage commissioner sends the registration to Vital Statistics where it is registered, coded for statistical reporting and microfilmed for permanent retention.
It is from this Registration of Marriage that certificates are issued.
